Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison has committed A$100m ($71.46m) in funding to support clinical trials being conducted in rural, regional and remote areas across the country.

The initiative is expected to bolster patient access to new treatments and medicines, irrespective of where they live. This addresses the limited access and participation for doctors and patients in rural, regional and remote areas.

In addition, the programme will see direct industry investments in jobs and clinical trials supply chain services.

The initiative will complement the $614m financing that is part of the country’s ten-year Medical Research Future Fund Investment Plan.

It further complements the $7m funding intended to aid states and territories in achieving consistency across clinical trial systems in Australia.

The Australia Liberal National Government plans to open a competitive grant round which will run from 1 October to 30 November this year.

A statement from the government read: “A peer review panel selected by Australian Medical Research Advisory Board and the National Health and Medical Research Council would then consider and rank proposals with successful participants to be announced by 31 March 2020 for commencement after 1 July 2020.

“The funding will come from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) National Critical Infrastructure initiative and will be delivered over five years from 2020-21.”

Furthermore, the government has also outlined a plan for bolstering its health system, including $40bn support for new medicines and research.

Last month, Australia announced approximately A$25m in funding to boost patient access to cancer and rare disease trials in the country.

The country’s efforts in clinical trials filed also involve development of the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework to enable the integration of trials service provision into routine hospital care.
