With so much innovation happening within the life sciences sector, now is arguably the perfect time for new faces to join the industry.

However, at the 2026 13th Annual Outsourcing in Clinical Trials UK and Ireland conference, held in London from 9-10 June, Maria Koufali, director of life sciences at the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), tells Clinical Trials Arena that it’s not always simple to usher in the next generation of talent within the sector, and that some hurdles must be overcome to inspire and motivate young people to seek a career in science.

In this episode of the GlobalData Healthcare podcast, Clinical Trials Arena reporter, Annabel Kartal-Allen, speaks with Koufali about how British life sciences companies can attract and retain talent across the younger generations, with a specific focus on clinical trials.

During the conversation, Koufali explores the common stereotypes and misconceptions around careers in life sciences. She also delves into what companies within the sector and the UK government need to do to achieve the UK’s goals of being an innovation powerhouse respected on the global stage.
