What is Business Expansion?
Business Expansion is one of our largest categories and looks at the core functions of business operations within the sector.
This consists of any projects that have expanded the company’s footprint in the sector, including: contract wins; launching in new territories; launching new product lines; the acquisition and expansion of facilities and real estate; acquisition of new machinery or other assets; improved logistics; partnerships; and significant staff increases.
Themes
During the research period the most common theme – unsurprisingly – within Business Expansion has been continued investment into Covid vaccine and drug development. The Messenger RNA technology is a source of hope to clinical research and trial organisations as well as the general public, as technology that might be applied to produce vaccines for other diseases as it has greatly shortened the time a vaccine needs to be developed and produced.
Significant investment also remains in the fields of cancer and Alzheimer’s drug development. This is unsurprising given the fact that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the world, coming in second only after heart desease, while Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.
Elsewhere a significant problem that still plagues the clinical trials field is inefficient trial and patient matching. Within Business Expansion we’ve seen companies trying to solve this problem by harnessing the power of AI and cloud technologies.
Digital solutions are also making a difference in trial management where companies have seen the advantages of such systems in improving the overall efficiency of research and trial organisations by preventing bottlenecks through automation.
Another key trend is the increased prevalence of pharmaceutical companies partnering with CRO organisations to outsource various stages of drug development in order to reduce costs.
