concentrated in early-phase trials, with Phase I and II together making up over
three-quarters of studies. The US leads global research at 32.7% of activity,
followed by China, the UK, Japan, and Canada. Late-stage attrition remains the
field’s persistent challenge.
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is characterised by cognitive decline, memory impairment, and functional deterioration. The disease is driven by complex pathophysiological mechanisms, including amyloid-beta plaque accumulation, tau protein aggregation, and neuroinflammation. Despite decades of research, it remains an area of high unmet need, with limited disease-modifying treatment options and significant challenges in clinical development.

According to GlobalData’s Clinical Trials Database, most activity is concentrated in the early stages of development. Phase I accounts for approximately 43.6% of all Alzheimer’s disease trials, highlighting a strong influx of early stage candidates entering the pipeline. Phase II represents 32.6% of all Alzheimer’s disease trials, indicating a reasonable progression into proof-of-concept studies. However, there is a notable drop into the later stages, with Phase III comprising 13.7% of trials and Phase IV accounting for 10% of trials.
When looking at geographies, the US accounts for approximately 32.7% of total activity, making it the clear leader in the global Alzheimer’s disease landscape. China follows with 12.1% of total activity, reflecting its growing role in clinical research. The UK represents 8.7% of total activity while Japan contributes 8.1% and Canada accounts for 7.9%. Collectively, these five countries represent around 69.5% of total Alzheimer’s disease activity, showing a highly concentrated global research footprint.
