It’s very easy for people, when buying their medication, to lose sight of the journey medicines take from clinical trials to the point it reaches their local pharmacy. It’s often a very long and arduous journey, well-documented on this site, that’s riddled with many bumps along the road. What’s important to note is that, oftentimes, pharmacists are involved in the process every step of the way.

Pharmacists play a very crucial role in the fabric of society, which is why today on World Pharmacist Day CTA is paying tribute to them. With approximately 42,990 registered pharmacists in England alone, pharmacists are at the forefront of health care, and it’s their service toward the patient that should never be understated.

This is why the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has announced the theme of World Pharmacist Day 2017 is: ‘Your pharmacist is at your service.’ Recently, FIP President Dr Carmen Peña explained the reasoning behind this year’s focus saying:

“This theme was chosen to reflect the numerous contributions the pharmacy profession makes to health. From research and development of medicines, to educating future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, and providing direct care, we do all this in the service of our patients and communities.

“[It’s important] to emphasize that pharmacists are the backbone of health care in many different settings. But providing care does not begin in community or hospital pharmacies. Taking care of patients starts with recognizing the health issues of populations and developing medicines, policies and education to tackle them. We pharmacists are often there at the very beginning of the process — when the first molecule that effectively treats a disease is identified.”

On social media throughout the day, CTA will pay tribute to hard work pharmacists do for us. Meanwhile, we want to hear from our readers on why you value pharmacists. Tweet us your thoughts to @ArenaClinical.

Pharmacists, we salute you!
