The Covid-19 pandemic continues into 2021 as cases and deaths continue to rise. Currently, there are over 95 million cases with over two million deaths worldwide, with the US having the highest count of any country in both respects: 24 million cases and over 400,000 deaths. Although some drug candidates have been approved, companies continue to investigate drug candidates through clinical trials.
The numbers of Covid-19 clinical trials continued to increase through 2020 and into 2021. As seen in Figure 1, there were 549 trials in early April 2020 and now in January 2021 there are over 4,000 clinical trials currently testing drug candidates for the treatment of Covid-19. That represents a 639% increase. The largest increase was reportedly between 6 April and 19 April 2020 with 411 new clinical trials. The number of Covid-19 clinical trials continues to rise every week with no regression showing.
