Australia has accounted for a 3.9% share of the global clinical trials activity in 2020, registering a decrease when compared with the last ten-year average of a 4.2% share, according to GlobalData.

Industry sponsored trials outnumber non-industry sponsored trials in Australia

Industry sponsored trials held a 79.8% share of all the clinical trials in Australia in 2020, when compared with the ten-year average of 74.8%. Non-industry sponsored trials accounted for a 20.2% share in 2020 as against the average of 25.2% in the last ten years.

Top therapy areas for industry sponsored clinical trials in Australia

Oncology was the leading therapy area for industry sponsored clinical trials in Australia in 2020 with a 37.3% share, as against a five-year average of 35.6% and a ten-year average of 32.0%.

Central Nervous System held a 14.2% share in 2020, over a five-year average of 14.7% and a ten-year average of 15.0%.

Infectious Disease held a 12.9% share in 2020, compared to a five-year average of 9.6% and a ten-year average of 10.7%. Respiratory held a 7.4% share in 2020, as against a five-year average of 5.9% and a ten-year average of 6.1%.

Central Nervous System was the leading therapy area for non-industry sponsored clinical trials in Australia in 2020 with a 23.0% share, as against a five-year average of 32.3% and a ten-year average of 29.0%.

Infectious Disease held a 20.1% share in 2020, over a five-year average of 9.9% and a ten-year average of 10.3%.

Oncology held a 20.1% share in 2020, compared to a five-year average of 18.2% and a ten-year average of 18.1%. Cardiovascular held a 16.7% share in 2020, as against a five-year average of 11.6% and a ten-year average of 12.5%.

Phase II trials held a 34.4% share of industry sponsored clinical trials in Australia in 2020, over a five-year average of 34.7% and a ten-year average of 32.4%.

Phase III trials held a 32.2% share in 2020, as against a five-year average of 36.2% and a ten-year average of 40.0%. Phase I trials held a 29.0% share in 2020, compared to a five-year average of 22.1% and a ten-year average of 18.6%.

Phase IV trials held a 4.4% share in 2020, over a five-year average of 7.0% and a ten-year average of 8.9%.

Phase II trials held a 43.7% share of non-industry sponsored clinical trials in Australia in 2020, over a five-year average of 45.9% and a ten-year average of 43.1%.

Phase IV trials held a 25.3% share in 2020, as against a five-year average of 25.5% and a ten-year average of 27.9%. Phase III trials held a 19.5% share, compared to a five-year average of 18.3% and a ten-year average of 18.4%.

Phase I held an 11.5% share in 2020, over a five-year average of 10.3% and a ten-year average of 10.5%.

Clinical Trials are sourced from numerous government, non-government and company clinical trial registries worldwide alongside clinical research publications, scientific conferences, company websites, SEC filings and more. The information is gathered by a combination of automation and secondary research to ensure accuracy and validity. A small number of Phase 0, Phase I/II, Phase II/III, and Phase III/IV trials were combined with Phase I, Phase II, Phase III, and Phase IV trials, respectively.
