In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the largest talking points within the pharma space – a trend we also see strongly within the clinical trials sector.

With its applications extending to site feasibility evaluations, patient recruitment & retention and predictive protocol analysis, AI’s role holds the potential to revolutionise the efficiency, organisation and speed of trials.

However, some early adopters of AI have had challenges in scaling the technology’s use outside of the pilot stage, as it does not always offer the benefits that sponsors are looking for.

In this episode of the GlobalData Healthcare podcast, CEO of Medidata, Anthony Costello, speaks with Clinical Trials Arena reporter, Annabel Kartal-Allen about the potential of AI in optimising clinical trial operations in the afterglow of the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference, held in Chicago from 29 May to 2 June.

He also talks over the key challenges to implementation and how they can be overcome, as well as how companies can move away from the pilot phase to full-scale implementation.
