Bayer and Henry Ford Health have entered a strategic research partnership aimed at expanding access to clinical trials for patients.
The collaboration brings together Bayer’s global expertise in drug development with the clinical research infrastructure of Henry Ford Health, which has established connections in its regional communities.

Initial activities will target cardiovascular and renal diseases, oncology, and women’s health.
Specific areas of focus will include advanced cancers, chronic kidney disease, gynaecologic conditions, heart failure, menopausal symptoms, stroke, targeted therapies and thrombosis.
Henry Ford Health chief scientific officer Dr David Lanfear said: “Clinical trials are often the first opportunity patients have to access cutting-edge treatments.
“Through this collaboration, we aim to make clinical research more accessible, reduce barriers to participation, accelerate the development of new treatments and ensure that more patients have the opportunity to benefit from medical innovation.”
Bayer and Henry Ford Health intend to work together throughout the clinical trial process, employing data and technology with the aim of making trials more efficient.
The partnership intends to facilitate patient access to new treatments by addressing obstacles that might otherwise prevent participation.
Bayer clinical development and operations head Christoph Koenen said: “Bayer is consistently exploring new avenues that can help more patients with diseases or health conditions that impact millions of people across the world.
“We share this commitment to patients and advancing drug discovery with likeminded institutions like Henry Ford Health that can help reduce barriers to accessing investigational or potential new treatments right in the very communities where patients are already receiving their care.”
In addition to the initial focus areas, the organisations plan to extend their collaboration to further research topics in the future.
Plans include the use of AI, analytics, and electronic health record data to enhance clinical trial design and patient identification, as well as generating real-world evidence on treatments and supporting advancements in healthcare data science.
Henry Ford Health is one of four academic health systems in the US chosen to participate in this strategic partnership model with Bayer.
Earlier this month, Bayer entered a strategic alliance with the University of Colorado Anschutz, UCHealth and Children’s Hospital Colorado to focus on clinical trial collaboration and drug development advancements.
