Concept: Norway’s semiconductor company Nordic Semiconductor (Nordic) has launched an ultra-low power dual-band Wi-Fi 6 companion chip called nRF7002. The company intends to compete in the competitive Wi-Fi IoT market for sensors and other low-power devices with its Wi-Fi-capable chip.
Nature of Disruption: When used in conjunction with Nordic’s current products, the nRF7002 offers Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and Wi-Fi-based location using service set identifier (SSID) detection of local hubs. These include the multiprotocol nRF52 and nRF53 series systems-on-chip (SoCs) and the cellular nRF91 Series IoT systems-in-package (SiPs). Also, the nRF7002 can be utilized with non-Nordic host devices. It delivers capabilities that are essential for ultra-low power IoT including Targeted Wait Time (TWT), orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA), and 20 MHz channels offering up to 69 Mbps of data throughput with 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM).
Outlook: The IoT device and networking market are anticipated to grow, starting with smart home devices and moving into enterprise-grade systems like industrial applications. Matter is a new universal networking standard supported by industry giants including Apple, Google, and Amazon that would allow devices to function on all of the main smart home systems. It aims to simplify and unify the IoT world for users and device makers. Key smart home features can operate whether or not accessories can connect to the internet and irrespective of a dedicated hub or bridge. Nordic supports all wireless standards used by Matter, notably Bluetooth low energy (LE) for device onboarding, Thread for low power mesh networks, and Wi-Fi for high-throughput.
