By GlobalDataOn 5 November a unique variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes Covid-19, was detected in 12 cases associated with mink.
This variant, referred to as the ‘cluster 5’ variant, has a combination of mutations that were not previously observed in circulating strains.
One of the responses Denmark officials are taking includes the culling of over 17 million farmed mink, enhanced surveillance in the affected area, and introduction of new movement restrictions to reduce transmission.
